The “Schelfstadt” attracts visitors with its large number of historical buildings. It was planned as the ‘New Town’ by Duke Friedrich Wilhelm in 1705. His intention mainly was to attract merchants and craftsmen to encourage Schwerin’s economy and political independence. Only in 1832 the “Schelfstadt” became part of the city. Today its many timbered houses and the beautiful “Schelfmarkt” square have their very own charm. Not far away from the baroque church on the “Schelfmarkt” square, in the “Puschkinstraße” street, stands the “Schleswig-Holstein-Haus”, which is an important centre for culture in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
